Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed that it will no longer release new PlayStation games on physical discs starting in January 2028. From that point onward, all newly launched first-party PlayStation titles will be sold exclusively in digital format through the PlayStation Store and select retail partners.
The company clarified that this change applies only to games released from January 2028 onwards. Existing PlayStation titles available on discs, as well as games scheduled to launch before the deadline, will not be affected. Players who already own physical copies can continue to install and play them as usual, with no changes to their access or functionality after the new policy comes into effect.
PlayStation Confirms Shift to Digital-Only Game Releases
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the change through an official PlayStation blog post, confirming that it will stop releasing new PlayStation games on physical discs from January 2028. Going forward, all new titles will be available exclusively as digital downloads through the PlayStation Store and selected retail partners.
According to the company, the decision reflects changing consumer habits, with an increasing number of PlayStation users choosing to purchase and download games digitally rather than buying disc-based copies. Sony also noted that digital distribution has become the preferred choice for much of its gaming community and believes this transition will help it improve access to games while strengthening its digital ecosystem.
The announcement comes shortly after Rockstar Games revealed new details about Grand Theft Auto VI. According to reports, the game’s physical edition is expected to include only a download code instead of a playable game disc, allowing players to redeem and download the title online. The move sparked criticism from many fans, who argue that owning a physical disc offers greater flexibility and a stronger sense of ownership compared to digital-only purchases.

Will Existing PlayStation Disc Games Still Work?
Sony has clarified that its new digital-only policy applies only to PlayStation games released from January 2028 onwards. Any titles launched before that date, including those already available on physical discs, will continue to be sold and supported in their existing format.
